Abstract

Allergy to pets is among themost common causes of allergic asthma and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. Pets ownership is increasing; passive exposure to dog and cat allergens is also increasing. Respiratory symptoms (allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, allergic asthma) are common among patients with cat or dog allergy, but very rarely anaphylaxis may develop. At present 8 cat and 7 dog allergens were identified.Medical history and skin prick testing (or finding specific IgE) with allergen extracts are sufficient to confirm allergy to pets. Molecular diagnostics may be useful in polysensitization determining primary sensitization and cross-reactivity.
