Abstract

Macrolides are frequently added to guidelines of pneumonia
treatment. They have antimicrobial activity against variety of pathogens that cause community acquired and atypical pneumonia. Macrolides also have immunomodulating properties. Clarithromycin is one of the newer macrolides, which has good penetration to pulmonary epithelial lining fluid. Its antimicrobial properties are increased by its 14-hydroxi metabolite.
