HELPING SMOKERS QUIT AND PHARMACOTHERAPY IN TOBACCO ADDICTION TREATMENT

Abstract

Tobacco dependence is a chronic disease. Only few percent of smokers can quit without support. Most of the smokers need smoking cessation. Smoking cessation is the most effective way to reduce mortality from tobacco related diseases. Every doctor using method of minimal intervention can help patients stop smoking and it’s only requires minimal time expenditures. It is proven scientific fact that doctor’s advice alone can significantly increase quit rate. After adequate diagnostic for patients especially with high level of physical dependence pharmacotherapy is indicated. Being psychoactive substance nicotine itself can be effectively used for smoking cessation. Together with nicotine replacement therapy antidepressants as bupropion can be used.
