Abstract
Hymenoptera insect sting causes systemic allergic reactions up to 7.5 % of the population. The patient who suffered such a reaction should be tested to find out to which insect venom he is allergic. The only treatment that can protect from lifethreatening reactions is specific venom immunotherapy. Sensitization is usually confirmed using diagnostic methods based on specific immunoglobulin E detection against pure venom extract. About half of the patients are diagnosed with double sensitization, which causes a dilemma in selecting the correct immunotherapy. This article reviews the current diagnostic possibilities of Hymenoptera venom allergy.
